A Roadside Retreat for Chef Express

A unique and convenient rest and refreshment area, designed by Bertone for Chef Express, exploring the future of highway dining.

A reimagined roadside sanctuary: this rest stop in Italy becomes a landmark of movement, relaxation, and identity. With bold red architectural gestures, iconic clocks, and luxurious interiors, the space invites travelers not only to refuel, but to reconnect.

This project stems from a clear objective: to redefine the identity and visibility of a rest stop along a major Italian highway.

Our architectural response introduces a striking red landmark in the form of three columns and inclined beams, abstractly shaping the silhouette of a house—a universal symbol of comfort and familiarity.

Positioned at the entrance, this distinctive element serves as a visual anchor, reinforcing the brand’s presence and capturing the attention of passing motorists.

To further amplify visibility and create a gathering point, we have designed a large outdoor clock facing the parking area. More than just a timepiece, the clock serves as a symbolic reference for the journey and shared moments on the road.

Inside the building, the design transitions from bold branding to human-scale comfort.

We have introduced a generous use of greenery throughout the interiors—vertical plant walls, integrated planters, and soft, organic textures—offering a refreshing counterpoint to the speed and stress of the highway. This infusion of nature transforms the space into a brief sanctuary — a pause for rest, nourishment, and sensory renewal for weary travelers.
Overall, the project balances architectural expression with emotional utility—iconic on the outside, rejuvenating on the inside. It is a place where movement meets memory, where a fleeting stop becomes a meaningful moment in the rhythm of the road.

A vibrant mosaic of culinary experiences unified by atmosphere: this gastronomic pavilion at Rome airport blends diverse culinary identities into a single, cohesive interior, where travelers can pause, reconnect, and recharge.

Collaborative, yet distinct

The layout allows each food vendor to express their unique style—through custom materials, lighting, and signage—while sharing architectural elements that create continuity throughout the space. Warm tones, natural textures, and a cohesive backdrop tie the various culinary islands together without diluting their individuality.

To enhance the emotional and sensory experience, we have introduced abundant greenery throughout the space. Plants soften visual transitions, bring warmth to the interiors, and serve as natural wayfinding elements that guide circulation.

More importantly, they create a calming atmosphere—a rare quality in the context of high-traffic airport environments. This infusion of biophilia helps transform an otherwise transient stop into a moment of comfort and rest.

Not just food, but an experience.

Ultimately, the pavilion offers more than food; it offers rhythm, atmosphere, and meaning. It becomes a space where time slows down between flights, where passengers from different paths converge not just to eat, but to breathe, rest, and feel momentarily at home.
